More to explore in the range
What does a port glass look like?
It resembles a small stemmed wine glass, with a bowl that narrows slightly towards the top. That shape holds the sweet aromas above the liquid. The capacity usually falls between 13 and 20 cl, clearly smaller than a wine glass.
How many cl does a port glass hold?
Most port glasses hold 13 to 20 cl, with outliers up to 25 cl for vintage port. You pour about 7 cl, so the glass sits just under half full. The rest of the bowl catches the aroma.
What is the difference between a port glass and a sherry glass?
A sherry glass, also called a copita, is narrower and straighter in shape and often holds 10 to 14 cl. A port glass is rounder and slightly roomier, because red port needs more air. In practice the two are used interchangeably.
Can you drink port from an ordinary wine glass?
You can, but 7 cl in a 45 cl bowl lies as a thin layer on the bottom and the aromas spread too far. A smaller glass keeps the scent closer to the rim and looks better in proportion too.
