How many cl fits in a jenever glass?
The classic brim-filler measures 3.5 cl and, filled to the rim, that is exactly one serving. Alongside it there is the old Dutch rummer of 5 cl, which you deliberately do not fill to the top so you can smell the jenever first.
Which glass do you use for old jenever?
For old jenever the rummer of 5 cl works best. You fill it halfway, so there is air above the drink and the aromas of grain, vanilla and cask ageing can come through. Serve cool but not ice cold.
Why do you bend over the jenever glass?
Because a brim-filler is filled right to the rim, so lifting it means spilling. You take the first sip with your hands behind your back, leaning over the table. It is folklore, but folklore with a practical origin.
What is the fill line on the glass for?
It marks the legal serving measure and is compulsory in hospitality when pouring spirits. At home it is mainly handy for keeping rounds equal and for seeing how much you actually pour.
Can jenever glasses go in the dishwasher?
Yes. Do place them apart in the rack and do not push them into each other, because small stemmed glasses jam easily and then break when you pull them apart. A sandblasted or fired-on fill line does not disappear in the wash.
