What exactly is a pitcher?
A jug with a handle and a pouring spout, usually between one and two litres. It is made to serve a whole table at once: a one-and-a-half-litre jug fills roughly four to six glasses, depending on the ice.
How many glasses does a pitcher hold?
Count on four to six glasses from a one-and-a-half-litre jug. With plenty of ice in the glass you get more, with a 40 cl long drink glass fewer. For beer, a two-litre jug works out at about four glasses.
Can you put ice in the pitcher itself?
Better not. Ice in the jug keeps melting all evening and dilutes whatever is left, while ice in the glass only chills that one glass. If you do want to keep the jug cold, stand it in a bucket of iced water.
Are plastic pitchers suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, polycarbonate jugs look like glass from a metre away but survive a fall onto tiles. They do tolerate lower dishwasher temperatures, so wash them on a short programme at a lower setting.
