Zwiesel Glas Vuelo

Vuelo is Spanish for flight, and that is reflected in the bowl: a long, slender shape that seems to rise from the base without any abrupt bends. What stands out most on the table is how tall the glasses are in relation to their capacity.

Zwiesel Glas makes the series in Germany from Tritan crystal glass, in which titanium and zirconium are used instead of lead. This makes the bowls hard, resistant to breakage at the stem, and able to withstand hundreds of dishwasher cycles without becoming dull.

Which Vuelo bowl to choose

Five glasses, five clear jobs. The white wine glass of 51.7 cl has a narrower bowl and keeps crisp wine cold for longer. The Burgundy glass of 84.8 cl is the widest of the range, made for pinot noir and other delicate reds that need plenty of air.

Between the two sits the red wine glass of 78.5 cl, the one for powerful, tannic wines. The all-round glass of 64 cl has a fill line, which is especially useful in hospitality because every guest gets exactly the same pour. The champagne glass of 32.3 cl has an effervescence point: a tiny etched mark at the base of the bowl where the bubbles form.

Pouring and tasting

The fill line on the 64 cl all-round glass shows at a glance how full a wine glass should be, which is far less than most people pour. Use that same level for the Burgundy glass too: the empty space above the wine is where the aroma gathers.

Swirl a young red a few times in the wide bowl before you smell it. With the champagne glass you do the opposite and leave it alone, so the bubbles keep rising from the effervescence point in a single straight thread.

Material and care

Tritan was developed to survive professional dishwashing. The glasses are dishwasher-safe and will not discolour there, even after long use. The pulled stem is drawn from the same piece of glass as the bowl, so the weak point of an attached stem simply is not there.

Never polish a glass dry by holding the bowl and twisting the stem. That is the classic way to snap a stem.

You will find the rest of the brand under Zwiesel Glas. If you prefer to search by shape rather than by brand, the red wine glasses and the large wine glasses are grouped by type. For the champagne glass with its effervescence point there are recipes ready at the kir royal and the mimosa. If you want to open up a closed wine faster without decanting it, have a look at the wine aerators.
