What is the difference between a carafe and a decanter?
An ordinary carafe is meant for serving, a decanter for aerating wine. The latter has a wide, flat base, so more wine comes into contact with air and a young wine opens up faster.
How do I get the film out of a carafe?
Fill the carafe with warm water, a dash of cleaning vinegar and a handful of rice grains, and swirl gently. The grains scour the film loose without scratching. Rinse well afterwards and let it dry upside down.
How long can wine stay in a carafe?
Count on a few hours for most wines. A robust young red gains from half an hour to an hour of air, but an old wine can flatten out quickly instead. Leftovers are better kept back in the bottle.
Is a carafe dishwasher-safe?
Most glass carafes are, provided they stand upright and stable. Crystal models and carafes with a cork or metal stopper are better washed by hand, and every carafe should dry upside down before you put it away.
