What is Bols?

The world's oldest spirits brand comes from Amsterdam

In 1575, Lucas Bols started a distillery in Amsterdam, outside the city walls because of the fire hazard. This makes Bols the world's oldest surviving spirits brand. Through the VOC, Bols gained access to spices and fruit from around the world, and the brand grew into the leading maker of liqueurs and genever.

Today, Bols still makes genever (young, old, Corenwyn and the modern Bols Genever), Bols Vodka and a range of more than thirty liqueurs, from Bols Blue and Triple Sec to Peach and Strawberry. Bartenders around the world use these liqueurs as building blocks for cocktails. In Amsterdam, you can visit the brand at the House of Bols near Museumplein.

What percentage of alcohol is in Bols?
It varies by bottle. Bols Young and Very Old Jenever are 35%, Bols Genever and Corenwyn 38%, and Bols Vodka 37.5%. The liqueurs range from 21% for Bols Blue and 38% for Triple Sec to 17% for fruit liqueurs such as Peach and Strawberry.
Is Bols really the oldest drinks brand in the world?
Yes. Lucas Bols began distilling in Amsterdam in 1575, and the brand has existed continuously ever since. This makes Bols the world's oldest surviving spirits brand.
What is the difference between young and old jenever?
It is not about age but about the recipe. Young jenever is the modern style with little malt wine: neutral, fresh and dry. Old jenever is the traditional style with more malt wine: smoother, rounder and grain-sweet. Corenwyn contains at least 51% malt wine and is matured in wood.
What is Bols Genever?
The jenever that Bols brought back to the market in 2008 according to an 1820 recipe, with plenty of malt wine and a subtle blend of herbs (the Original, 42%). The Bols Genever 21st Century edition is a lighter version at 38% with less malt wine, developed with Amsterdam bartenders. Both come in the jug-shaped bottle and are intended for cocktails and drinking neat.
What is the difference between Bols Blue and Triple Sec?
Both are orange liqueurs, but Bols Blue is colored blue, sweeter and milder (21%). Triple Sec is colorless, drier and stronger (38%), and suitable as a substitute for Cointreau in a Margarita or Cosmopolitan. Bols Blue is mainly used for coloring.
How do you drink Bols jenever?
Young jenever ice-cold from the freezer, in a drinking glass filled to the brim that you place to your mouth without using your hands. Old jenever and Corenwyn at room temperature or lightly chilled, to be savored slowly. Both are delicious as a kopstoot alongside a beer.
