Texels
Texels is the beer of the Texelse Bierbrouwerij in Oudeschild. The best-known beer is Skuumkoppe: a dark wheat beer with caramel and apricot. You will also find an autumn bock and a tripel. Here you can read what they taste like, how to pour them and which glass goes with them.
Beer from the island
Texels is the beer of the Texelse Bierbrouwerij. It is located in Oudeschild, on the edge of the De Hoge Berg nature reserve, in a former dairy factory. Where cheese was once made, copper brewing kettles now stand. People search for it as texels or texels bier: they refer to the same brewery.
The flagship is Texels Skuumkoppe, the brewery's most-drunk beer. It is a dark wheat beer: brewed with wheat, like a weizen or witbier, but darker and fuller, with caramel and apricot. The name comes from the white foam caps on the waves. Tuunwal Tripel is also named after the island: tuunwallen are the low banks of turf with which the sheep pastures on Texel are enclosed.

Caramel & fruit

Lightly sweet
Skuumkoppe finishes creamy and lightly sweet. Tuunwal Tripel finishes with a distinct hop bitterness.
Flavor profile of Texels Skuumkoppe (6%). Juttersbock scores higher for maltiness and strength, while Tuunwal Tripel scores higher for bitterness and strength.
How to pour Texels
A wheat beer produces a lot of foam. Pour gently and choose a glass with plenty of room.
Pour gently
Hold the glass at an angle and let the beer run down the side. Set the glass upright when it is two-thirds full and pour into the middle to top it up, creating a beautiful head.
More about pouring beer →Add the yeast
Tuunwal Tripel is unfiltered. If you see a layer of yeast at the bottom of the bottle, swirl it gently at the end and pour it in as well. This makes the beer a little cloudier and fuller.
Not too cold
Drink Skuumkoppe at 6 to 8 degrees, and the Juttersbock and tripel slightly warmer, around 8 to 12 degrees. If it is too cold, you will taste less of the caramel and fruit.
Beer tasting at home →Texels at the table
Dark, malty beers pair well with hearty food. That works out well on an island with lamb and cheese.
Savory and hearty
With mashed potatoes, beef stew, or a croquette sandwich. The caramel complements roasted and braised flavors.
Autumn and game
With game, mushroom stew, or lamb. A bock and autumn cuisine belong together.
Cheese and chicken
With mature cheese, roasted chicken, or quiche. The hop bitterness keeps it fresh.
Cheese board
With a board of aged cheese, sausage, and mustard. Place the three beers next to each other and taste the difference.
The right glass for Texels
For Skuumkoppe, choose a large glass, as a wheat beer produces a lot of foam. For the bock and tripel, a tulip or chalice on a stem with a capacity of 38 to 40 cl works best. These are the glasses we recommend ourselves.
