What is Pisang Ambon?

Banana in bright green

Pisang Ambon is a Dutch liqueur flavoured with banana and other tropical fruit. The name comes from Indonesian: pisang means banana, and Ambon is an island in the Moluccas. The recipe is based on an old Indonesian liqueur. Pisang Ambon was launched in 1948 and is made by Lucas Bols.

You can recognise it immediately by its bright green colour. In the eighties and nineties, it was a fixture at every party, usually mixed with orange juice. Pisang Ambon is also a brand name: other banana liqueurs, such as De Kuyper's, are simply called pisang or banana liqueur. The Pisang Ambon bottle at Gall & Gall has 17% alcohol, while De Kuyper's banana liqueur has 15%.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Pisang Ambon

Pisang Ambon is quite sweet on its own. That’s why most people drink it mixed, in a tall glass with plenty of ice.

With orange juice

The classic: 4 cl Pisang Ambon in a highball glass with ice, topped up with orange juice. Banana and orange together, refreshing and fruity.

Glass: highball glass →

With lemon soda

4 cl Pisang Ambon with ice and lemon soda or bitter lemon. The green color remains beautifully visible, and the acidity makes it less sweet.

Neat, chilled

A small glass, well chilled or served over an ice cube. Delicious after dinner, for example with a scoop of ice cream.

Mixing with Pisang Ambon

All cocktail recipes →

Pisang Ambon adds banana and a bright color to a drink. Combine it with citrus and tropical juice to keep it refreshing.

Tropical

With pineapple juice

Pisang Ambon with pineapple juice and a splash of lime juice. A tropical long drink that’s a bit like a Piña Colada without cream.

Refreshing

With tonic

Pisang Ambon with tonic and a lime wedge. The tonic’s bitterness makes the banana less sweet.

Colorful

Instead of curaçao

Use Pisang Ambon in a recipe that calls for blue curaçao, such as a Blue Lagoon. You’ll get a green version with banana.
