What is Kahlúa?

Rum and arabica coffee from Veracruz

Kahlúa is a coffee liqueur from Mexico, made with rum, sugarcane and 100% arabica coffee from the state of Veracruz. The brand has existed since 1936, and the name comes from the Nahuatl language and means something like 'house of the Acolhua people'. From coffee plant to bottle, the process takes around seven years: the coffee beans grow slowly in the shade, are roasted and infused, and only then mixed with rum and vanilla.

Kahlúa is the world's most widely used coffee liqueur in cocktails and the basis of classics such as the White Russian, Black Russian and Espresso Martini. In the Netherlands, the bottle contains 16% alcohol. The brand belongs to Pernod Ricard.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Kahlúa

Kahlúa is rarely drunk neat. With milk, in an Espresso Martini or over ice, the coffee comes into its own best.

Espresso Martini

50 ml vodka, 30 ml Kahlúa and 30 ml fresh espresso, shaken hard with ice and strained into a coupe. Garnish with three coffee beans.

White Russian

50 ml vodka and 25 ml Kahlúa in a tumbler with ice, topped with a layer of whipped cream or whole milk. Without milk, it is a Black Russian.

Kahlúa with milk or on the rocks

50 ml Kahlúa with 100 ml cold milk in a tumbler full of ice: coffee ice cream in a glass. Or neat over ice, optionally with a splash of espresso.

What percentage of alcohol does Kahlúa contain?
In the Netherlands, Kahlúa contains 16% alcohol. In some other countries, Kahlúa is sold at 20%; check the label if you have a bottle from abroad.
What is Kahlúa made from?
Rum, sugar cane, 100% arabica coffee from the Mexican state of Veracruz and vanilla. The coffee beans are grown in the shade, roasted and infused, then mixed with the rum and sugar.
What is the difference between Kahlúa and Tia Maria?
Both are rum-based coffee liqueurs made with arabica. Kahlúa comes from Mexico, is sweeter and has 16% alcohol. Tia Maria originally comes from Jamaica, is stronger (20%) and drier, with more bitter coffee notes. You can use either in an Espresso Martini.
Which coffee liqueur do you use for an Espresso Martini?
Kahlúa is the classic choice and makes a sweet, rounded cocktail. For a drier, stronger drink, use Tia Maria or a modern coffee liqueur such as Mr Black. Most important is fresh espresso: it creates the layer of foam.
How do you drink Kahlúa?
Usually mixed: with milk or cream (White Russian), with vodka (Black Russian), in an Espresso Martini or as a splash in coffee. It can also be served neat over ice, as a sweet digestif after a meal.
How long does an opened bottle of Kahlúa keep?
According to the brand, around four years after production, even after opening. Store the bottle tightly sealed in a cool, dark place. The coffee flavor gradually becomes flatter over time, but the liqueur does not spoil.
