Don Julio Blanco

What is Don Julio Blanco?

Tequila as it comes from the still

Don Julio Blanco is the purest bottle in the range: tequila that has not been aged in wood after distillation. The agaves are blue Weber agaves from the highlands of Jalisco, hand-harvested when fully ripe, and the tequila is distilled in copper stills. Because there is no barrel involved, you taste the agave itself: fresh, lightly sweet, and slightly green.

That makes Blanco different from its older siblings. Reposado and Añejo get vanilla and caramel from the oak; Blanco stays bright and citrusy, with a peppery side. That is exactly why it is the best choice for cocktails in which lime and grapefruit take center stage. Julio González started his distillery in 1942; this tequila shows most clearly what it is all about.

Spicy Margarita

Muddle two jalapeño slices in the shaker, then add 50 ml Blanco, 25 ml Cointreau and 25 ml lime juice. Shake hard with ice and strain into a margarita glass. The tequila's pepper and the pepper from the jalapeño amplify each other.

Over ice with lime

40 ml Blanco over a large ice cube in a tumbler, with a strip of lime peel. The cold takes the edge off and brings out the agave and citrus.

Everything about Don Julio →
What percentage of alcohol is in Don Julio Blanco?
Don Julio Blanco contains 38% alcohol, just like the Reposado, Añejo and 1942. Many other tequilas are 40%.
Is Don Julio Blanco aged?
No. Blanco means that the tequila has not been aged in barrels. As a result, it is clear in color and you taste the agave and citrus, without the vanilla and caramel of oak.
What is the difference between Don Julio Blanco and Reposado?
The Reposado rests for eight months in American oak and is smoother, with vanilla and a light woody note. The Blanco is unaged, fresher and more peppery. Choose the Blanco for cocktails with lime or grapefruit; the Reposado is rounder when drunk neat.
Can you drink Don Julio Blanco neat?
Yes. It’s tequila made from 100% blue agave, so salt and lemon aren’t necessary. Drink it over ice from a tumbler or at room temperature from a small tasting glass.
Which soft drink pairs with Don Julio Blanco?
Grapefruit soda is the classic: it’s what you use to make a Paloma. Soda water with a generous splash of lime or a dry tonic also works well with the fresh, citrusy flavor.
