Diplomático Mantuano
The lighter, drier sibling of Reserva Exclusiva. A blend of heavy and light rums, aged for up to eight years in three types of small casks: great neat, and one of the best rums for mixing.

What makes Mantuano different?
Diplomático blends rums from different stills in La Miel, at the foot of the Venezuelan Andes. For Mantuano, the ratio is 40% heavy rums and 60% light and medium-bodied rums. The blend is aged for up to eight years in three types of small casks: American white oak, ex-bourbon, and ex-malt whisky.
The main difference from the better-known Reserva Exclusiva lies in that ratio. The Reserva consists of 80% heavy rums and is aged for twelve years; it is fuller and sweeter. Mantuano is lighter, drier, and woodier, making it more versatile: good enough to drink neat, and not so sweet that it overwhelms a cocktail.
In brief
Plum, oak, and vanilla
Dried plum
Dried fruit, especially plums, with oak and a subtle spice note.
Fruit, wood, and vanilla
Balanced: dried fruit, wood, and vanilla in harmony. Less sweet than the Reserva Exclusiva, with more pronounced woody notes.
Dry and woody
A medium-length, dry finish with notes of oak and spice returning.
Flavor profile of Diplomático Mantuano neat. An ice cube makes it smoother and brings out more vanilla.
Tasting and mixing with Mantuano
Taste it neat first, then with a drop of water. Then you'll know why it works so well in cocktails.
Neat in a tasting glass
3 cl in a tulip-shaped tasting glass. First smell the dried fruit and wood, take a sip, then add a few drops of water: the vanilla will come through more clearly.
Tasting glasses →Rum Old Fashioned
Stir 60 ml Mantuano, 5 ml sugar syrup, and 2 dashes of bitters briefly with ice, then strain over a large ice cube in a tumbler. Garnish with a piece of orange peel.
Old Fashioned →With cola and lime
50 ml Mantuano with 150 ml cola and a generous lime wedge in a highball glass filled with ice. A Cuba Libre with more depth than one made with white rum.

Rum Old Fashioned
Rum, sugar, bitters, and a large ice cube. The Mantuano's woody notes come through beautifully here.
Cuba Libre
Rum, cola and lime. Fuller and less sweet with aged rum.
Rum Punch
Rum, fruit juice, lime and spices. The dried fruit complements the tropical juices.
Jungle Bird
Dark rum, Campari, pineapple and lime. Bitter, fruity and surprisingly well-balanced.More Diplomático flavors
