Blowjob shot

The Blowjob shot is a layered shot of coffee liqueur and Baileys topped with a dollop of whipped cream. Traditionally, you pick up the glass without using your hands and drink it all in one go, bringing the whipped cream along with it. Without that ritual, it remains a small, sweet liqueur shot that you might as well drink by hand.

The story

The blowjob shot belongs to the same family as the B52 shot: liqueurs with different densities that are poured over one another in layers. Coffee liqueur is the heaviest and sinks to the bottom, Irish cream floats on top, and the whipped cream seals the glass. No creator is known; the shot appeared in American and European bars in the 1980s and 1990s and spread from there. The name refers to the way it is drunk, without using your hands. It is still listed under that name on menus in Dutch bars.

The right glass

A straight shot glass with a capacity of 5 to 6.5 cl works well: the layers remain visible, and there is room for the whipped cream. Choose a glass with a smooth, slightly thicker rim, as the glass is picked up by the rim. Narrow, tall glasses show the two layers most clearly, while wide glasses blend together more quickly. If you only have 3.5 cl shot glasses, use 1.5 cl of each liqueur. Chill the glasses in the refrigerator beforehand. For the same liqueurs served neat, our liqueur glasses are a logical choice.

What do you use to make a Blowjob shot?

For a Blowjob shot, you need the right base. Well-known bottles include Boswandeling. On each drink page, you can read the alcohol percentage, what it tastes like, which cocktails it works well in, and which glass you need.

Variations & twists

Replace the coffee liqueur with amaretto for a softer, nuttier version, or use chocolate liqueur if you want to lean more toward dessert. Add a layer of Grand Marnier for something close to the B52 shot, which consists of three layers. If you prefer mixing the cream into the drink rather than layering it on top, make a Mudslide instead. A splash of cold espresso in the bottom layer makes the whole thing less sweet. Other shots with a creamy layer include the Baby Guinness and the Slippery Nipple.

Serving tip

Whip the cream until firm or use a can of whipped cream, because loose cream sinks through the liqueur within a minute. Only put the shots on the table when everyone is ready, as the layers quickly run into each other. Serve with a glass of water.

Good to know

Blowjob shot or blow job shot?

You’ll come across both spellings: written together as blowjob shot and separately as blow job shot. On Dutch menus, the version without a space is most common, and in the plural you write blowjob shots. The name refers to the way it is drunk and says nothing about the recipe, which is virtually the same in every bar. Some venues list it under a more neutral name, such as cream shot or Baileys shot. In that case, ask for coffee liqueur with Irish cream and whipped cream, and everyone will know what you mean.

Getting the layers right

Pour the coffee liqueur slowly into the center of the glass, keeping the sides clean. Then hold a bar spoon with the rounded side facing up just above that layer and slowly let the Baileys run over it; the difference in density does the rest. If it goes wrong, you poured too quickly. Liqueurs from the refrigerator work better than those at room temperature because they are slightly thicker. You can find a long-handled bar spoon and a jigger in our cocktail sets.

Which liqueurs do you use?

Coffee liqueur and Irish cream form the base. Kahlúa is used most often, but any brand will do as long as it is sweet and syrupy; a thin, bitter coffee liqueur will not settle as nicely on the bottom. Use Baileys or another Irish cream for the second layer. Keep in mind that cream and citrus do not mix: a splash of lime juice in the glass will cause the cream to curdle. Store opened Irish cream in the refrigerator and follow the best-before date, as it spoils faster than regular liqueur.

The ritual behind this shot

In the classic way of serving it, the glass stays on the table and the drinker picks it up without using their hands, placing their mouth at the rim to drink it in one go. That is where the name comes from. In practice, this only works with a glass that is sturdy enough and has a rim that does not feel sharp, and with whipped cream that has been whipped until stiff. If you would rather skip that, simply drink the shot by hand; the taste remains the same. Explain it before serving, so everyone knows what to expect.

A round for more people

For eight glasses, you need about 16 cl of coffee liqueur and 16 cl of Irish cream, plus a small carton of whipped cream. Place all the glasses on a tray and pour all the bottom layers first, followed by the Baileys; this helps you keep a steady hand and keeps the layers neat. Add the whipped cream last, just before serving. Stick to one round and serve water and something to eat alongside it. Looking for a second shot for the same evening? The Kamikaze shot is a fresher alternative.

Alcohol-free and dairy-free

You can make a 0.0 version with strong cold coffee, lightly sweetened with sugar syrup, as the bottom layer, topped with a non-alcoholic cream liqueur. The layers will be less defined because the difference in density is smaller, so pour extra slowly. If you do not want dairy, replace the Irish cream with a plant-based cream liqueur and the whipped cream with whipped canned coconut cream. Chill the coconut cream overnight first; then it will whip up firmly. The flavor will be slightly less rich, but there is hardly any visible difference in the glass.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a blowjob shot?

A blowjob shot consists of 2 cl coffee liqueur, 2 cl Baileys or another Irish cream, and a dollop of stiffly whipped cream. The coffee liqueur goes into the glass first, the Baileys is poured over a bar spoon to create a second layer, and the whipped cream is added last. No shaking or stirring is needed.

How do you drink a blowjob shot?

Traditionally, without using your hands: the glass stays on the table, and you pick it up by the rim with your mouth to drink it empty in one go. This brings the whipped cream along. Drinking from the hand works just as well; the taste remains the same, although the layers blend a little faster.

Why don't my layers stay in place?

Usually, you pour too quickly. Let the Baileys run over the rounded side of a bar spoon, just above the coffee liqueur, so it lands gently on the bottom layer. Use liqueurs straight from the refrigerator, because cold liqueur is thicker and sinks less easily. A straight, narrow shot glass also helps: in a wide glass, the layers almost always mix.

Which glass do you use for blowjob shots?

A straight shot glass holding 5 to 6.5 cl. This keeps the two layers visible and leaves room at the top for the whipped cream. A smooth rim is comfortable, since the glass is picked up by the rim. Check out our shot glasses for suitable sizes.
