Static charge makes particles stick together, and those clumps create dense spots in your bed. Water always follows the path of least resistance, so it flows around the clump instead of through it. The result is channeling: part of your coffee is over-extracted, another part barely extracted, and your cup tastes sour and bitter at the same time. A few seconds of stirring with the needles breaks up those clumps and distributes the grounds evenly. Wipe the needles clean after your shift and store the tool upright so they do not bend.
